Welcome to the 2nd Annual CEEA/ACEG Conference site. This year the conference will be held at Memorial University in beautiful St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA) is an organization whose mission is to “enhance the competence and relevance of graduates from Canadian engineering schools through continuous improvement in engineering education and design education.” This second annual CEEA conference continues to build on the previous efforts of the Canadian Design Engineering Network (CDEN) and the Canadian Congress on Engineering Education (C2E2). We strongly encourage the broad community of engineering educators to join us – from faculties of engineering and applied science, arts, science, education to libraries, teaching and learning centres and industry. Relevant student papers are also welcomed.

Accommodations CEEA 2011
Conference delegates will be able to stay on the Memorial University campus – in close proximity to conference events, or off-campus at local hotels or other accommodations. For your convenience we have reserved a block of rooms at two nearby hotels, both of which are within 30 minute walking distance. We highly recommend that you reserve your accommodation as early as possible to ensure availability of space. June is a very busy month within the St. John’s area and as such accommodations may be very difficult to secure if not booked early.

Upon peer review and acceptance of abstract, authors may choose to submit a full conference paper (six pages) or a one-page condensed paper. Condensed papers will be published in the proceedings as conference presentations.

General CEEA-ACEG Paper Submission Guidelines
The first annual CEEA conference welcomes papers on a broad range of topics relevant to the theme – “The Evolution of Engineering Education”.
Authors are required to submit a 250-300 word abstract for review. You will be asked in the abstract submission process to indicate if you intend to provide a 6 page conference paper or a 1 page “mini-paper” for your final submission, upon acceptance of your abstract.

If you have submitted an abstract, we will contact you no later than APRIL 15th to confirm your acceptance.

Formatting Instructions for Final Papers
Full Conference Papers: The format for full conference papers is similar to the IEEE format. A template in MS Word format can be found here.
Conference papers should not exceed 6 pages. Papers must be submitted on-line only and should be in PDF file format.
Mini-papers: The format for 1 page mini-papers can be found in MS Word format here.
A Right To Publish, found here, granting permission to publish the submission in the Conference Proceedings, must be completed for each final paper submission and sent as a signed hardcopy to the conference organizers.

The San Jose Mine Rescue : An Overview of Plan A and the Rescue's Relevance to the North American Mining Industry

The 2010 Copiapó mining accident occurred on August 5, 2010 when part of the San José copper-gold mine in the Atacama Desert near Copiapó, Chile, collapsed, leaving 33 men trapped 700 meters below ground. The miners survived underground for a record 69 days. All 33 were rescued and brought to the surface on October 13, 2010. After the last trapped miner was winched to the surface, the rescue workers held up a sign stating “Misión cumplida Chile” (English: “Mission accomplished Chile”) to the estimated 1 billion people watching the rescue on live television around the world.
The Cementation group and their Chilean partner Terraservice were involved in the mine rescue program at the San Jose mine in Chile. The Terraservice group was the first drilling contractor to break a hole through to confirm that the workers were alive. Terracem (a partnership company between Cementation and Terraservice) is a Chilean based raise boring contractor with shop facilities in Copaipo. The group mobilized a Strata 950 raise bore machine immediately to carry out the Plan A drilling program. This presentation gives a brief overview of that drilling program and the rescue in general. The lessons learned from the rescue are relevant to the mining industry and will be reviewed as well.
In late 1998 Roy started Cementation’s operations in Canada as President. Cementation is an underground hardrock mine contracting and engineering firm that builds new mines and expands existing mines for mine Owners. Today he is responsible Cementation’s operations in North and South America which include companies in the USA and in South America. The company was recently recognized in McLean’s magazine as one of the top 100 employers in Canada. Mr. Slack has been actively involved in the CIM as both a National Member and as the past Chair of the Northern Gateway branch. He is a member of the CIM Safety advisory committee as well as a number of other safety groups. In 2008 he was awarded the Engineer’s Medal for Entrepreneurship by the Professional Engineers of Ontario. He is presently an advisory board member for Workplace Safety North. In 2009 he was awarded the Metal Mining Society Award by the Canadian Institute of Mining (CIM).
