Director of the Center for Engineering Learning & Teaching;

Professor, Human Centered Design & Engineering

Mitchell T. and Lella Blanche Bowie Endowed Chair, University of Washington.

 

Cynthia J. Atman is the founding director of the Center for Engineering Learning & Teaching (CELT), a professor in Human Centered Design & Engineering, and the inaugural holder of the Mitchell T. & Lella Blanche Bowie Endowed Chair at the University of Washington. Dr. Atman is co-director of the Consortium to Promote Reflection in Engineering Education (CPREE), funded by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. She was director of the NSF-funded Center for the Advancement of Engineering Education (CAEE), a national research center that was funded from 2003-2010.  Her research focuses on engineering design learning, considering context in engineering design, and the use of reflection to support learning.  She is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the ASEE. Dr. Atman holds a Ph.D. in Engineering and Public Policy from Carnegie Mellon University.

Deanna Burgart, P.Eng. CET

 

Deanna Burgart is a self-proclaimed “Indigeneer” (Indigenous Engineer) and president of Indigenous Engineering Inclusion Inc. She spent nearly two decades working in the energy sector in sustainability, engineering, and risk management.  In 2016, Deanna redirected her own energy towards professional speaking, post-secondary STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) curriculum Indigenization, petroleum and pipeline training for government, industry and Indigenous communities and Innovation Culture workshops. She leads mentoring circles for Indigenous women in business and entrepreneurship and works with organizations seeking to improve their business strategies with Indigenous communities.  She is the co-founder of the Empowered Innovation Institute and IndigeSTEAM. Her volunteer efforts are focused around Indigenous youth STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) outreach, and it is her dream to see more diverse perspectives in STEM professions.

Deanna is a dynamic speaker and storyteller with over 10 years of teaching experience in Canada and Kazakhstan. She has delivered keynotes and workshops across the country on the energy industry, Indigenous inclusion, sustainability and pipelines.

Workshop title: What you need to know for your upcoming CEAB accreditation visit

Workshop description: This workshop is designed specifically for the individuals within Engineering Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) who are responsible for preparing for an CEAB accreditation visit. Topics to be covered include: • an overview of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board’s (CEAB) accreditation processes and criteria; • highlights of recent changes to criteria, processes, and documentation requirements;  • tips on how to prepare to receive an accreditation visit; • approaches to demonstrating compliance with CEAB criteria.
