Overview

Sustainability in Engineering Leadership and Management (SELM) SIG Workshop.

Please join the SELM SIG for it’s September workshop, featuring Dr. Lianne Lefsrud, P.Eng., Assistant Professor, Engineering Safety and Risk Management, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Alberta.

Abstract: Most engineering students receive some instruction on team functioning, leadership, entrepreneurship, and perhaps management conundrums. Power and influence underlie these group dynamics, yet are rarely examined. This workshop will:

  • outline various theories of power,
  • discuss how these forms of power can be recognized and managed, and
  • give relevant examples and exercises for use in the classroom.

Speakers

Lianne Lefsrud, P.Eng.

Lianne Lefsrud examines methods of hazard identification and risk management, risk evaluation and social license to operate, and drivers of technology adoption in oil and gas, mining, pipelining, construction, agriculture, and railroading, among other industries. Her research asks: How can decision-making systems be enhanced so that organizations are better equipped to recognize, adapt to and absorb unforeseen events and manage the resulting risks? She has an BSc in Environmental Engineering, MSc in Environmental Engineering and Sociology, a PhD in Strategic Management and Organization. Professionally, her career spans two decades with senior roles in industry, consulting, and regulation. Besides doing internationally award-winning research, she also provides policy and strategy advice to government and industry. For more, see: www.liannelefsrud.com and https://twitter.com/lefsrud.

Professor Marnie V. Jamieson

Industrial Professor and William and Elizabeth Magee Chair in Chemical Process Design, Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada

Prof. Marnie Jamieson, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Chemical Engineering), P.Eng. (Alberta) holds the William and Elizabeth Magee Chair in Chemical Process Design at the University of Alberta and she is the co-chair and a founder of the CEEA-ACEG Sustainable Engineering Leadership and Management Special Interest Group. She is also a founding member of the CEEA-ACEG Institutes for Effective Engineering Teaching and Engineering Education Research (IEET and IEER). She is an ongoing contributor at both the CEEA-ACEG and ASEE engineering education conferences. She has also taught engineering education teaching excellence programs for engineering professors both in person in Peru and remotely in Egypt.  Currently, she teaches chemical process design, first year design, and design innovation with sustainability and engineering leadership using both in person and remote methods. She has been an E-Core resources contributor. Her mixed methods research investigates the use of metacognition, innovation, community of practice, and leadership in engineering design and engineering education using a blended and active learning environment. She has researched and contributed to the development of engineering graduate attribute measurement and continual improvement processes.  Her recent work has focused on the development of online learning community, assessment and course conversion for remote delivery using active learning and asynchronous strategies, and the evolution of sustainable engineering leadership and management.
